Check the rules first

Before planning, check your school or program’s rules on gifts, holidays, and budgets. A classroom exchange may need approval, and families may celebrate different holidays. A winter or friendship theme can be more inclusive than a holiday name.

Keep the budget very low

A small, firm budget protects families who cannot spend much. Some classes choose a low limit or a make-it-yourself gift such as a drawing, a bookmark, or a small craft. Tell families the limit in writing and ask them to keep to it.

Make sure every child gets a gift

The point is that nobody is left out. Draw names so each child gives and receives one gift. Use exclusions sparingly, for example to keep siblings from drawing each other. An adult should check the result, and keep a spare gift ready in case a child is absent on the day.

Do the draw with adult help

An adult runs the draw and keeps the matches. Hand each child a slip privately, or send the link to a parent. Children should not be asked to share personal information such as home addresses. Younger children may need a grown-up to help with the shopping or making.

Run the exchange calmly

Set a time for opening gifts and let children open them one at a time, with a thank you to each giver. Keep a way for a child to quietly pass on the exchange. Afterward, ask what children liked about giving, so the focus stays on the kind gesture rather than the gift.
